Empress Cemetery RecordsThe Village of Empress gave me access to the burial records and Cemetery Register for the Empress Cemetery. I took many photos, though I would have liked to scanned the books. It's summer, so transcribing them is not a high priority right now for me because there is much physical work to be done. This is what is available right now. The accuracy of the earliest records is not good. I've discovered many incorrect dates so far, and one grown man was described as a child! Later years' information is more accurate. The records use the terms "Blocks" and "Lots". I use the terms "Columns" and "Plots. I call them "Columns" because they run from south to north, but some people call them "Rows", because that is how they appear when looking from the east, and all the graves face the east. Block A: Potter's Field? Western half of cemetery? The entire western half of the cemetery appears empty on the surface. I speculate that this half was used for mostly unmarked and undocumented graves. In the records are a few graves in "Block A". One description calls them "public" and another description is "Potter's Field". None of these graves have any known markers, and I suspect that they never did. The location of "Block A" in the cemetery is unknown. At some time, a person made a written list of these graves and speculated that they are in the southwest corner of the cemetery (far left corner from the main/east gate).
